Our History
Inspired by the book "Afrikan Holistic Health" by Dr. Llaila Afrika & his 6-Week Holistic Health Practitioner Training course, the idea of the African Holistic Health Chapter of New York was conceived in 2004 by Yvonne “Sista Shai” Hankins. Sista Shai recognized the need for making self empowering health resources available in the New York area and invited Dr. Afrika and other notable holistic health instructors to come and share their knowledge. There was also a need to assist graduates of Dr. Afrika’s courses and students of other teachers who were not practicing what they learned due to lack of confidence and support. More planning and work started bringing the idea into reality. Then, at the prompting and guidance of Dr. Afrika, The African Holistic Health Chapter of New York was born in 2007. Since then, the AHHCNY has brought in powerful holistic teachers from around the country, like Texas Holistic health educator Dr. Akua Gray, Philadelphia Reflexologist Dr. El Ha Gahn, Chicago-based Kemetic Yoga expert Yirser Ra Hotep, and others. Our mandate has since expanded to include public outreach designed to expose the public to various holistic healing modalities and provide our members with increased business opportunities. Since 2010, the Chapter and its members have been the featured holistic wing of the International African Arts Festival in Brooklyn, NY. The Chapter makes resources & memberships available along with a bi-monthly newsletter with over 4,000 subscribers. Follow us on social media: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and InstaGram.
